Padlet Method for online sorting
We are using www.Padlet.com as a platform for sorting produced q-set elements as cards in the online app. The sort can be done asynchronously by giving subjects the link and a reusable email address to login. Padlet has a free service that you use the app The preferred method of doing the Padlet sort is synchronously using a shared screen through Microsoft Teams or Zoom. This allows the researcher to watch the sort process, ask and answer any of the questions the subject has while they are doing the sort.
Process for creating a Padlet Q-sort
Creating the sort array (See example HERE):
- Open Padlet website and login to your account
- Select “Shelf” template
- Create your first column (at the left) as your ‘Unsorted” column
- Your next three columns going from left to right represent the 3 presort containers (e.g. most disagree, neutral, most agree)
- To the right of your presort columns, create your array columns and include in the headings the column and the number of items permitted (see example)
- Populate the “Unsorted” column with your statements, by creating statement items in that column. We suggest that you add them into the column in a random fashion. The column will extend as long as your items.
- Once the items are sorted you can close the tab and they will remain there. You would need to transcribe the item numbers as there is no capture of this for data input. Once you have transcribed the sort, your can reset it for the next subject.
- When using the sort with a subject, you will need to "Share" the Padlet with the subject. You should be able to to share a URL which gives the user the ability to Edit the Padlet.
- Tip: To move items from one column to another, it works best if the item is dragged and laid on the column heading you wish to drop it in.
- Tip: When doing the sort, remember you can "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" of the browser "View" menu as needed. You can also scroll left and right within the browser.

Using Padlet to design your complete process (see an example at HERE)
You can use Padlet to create a complete research process with components panels; description of study, release form, qsort process, and post sort questionnaire.
Some are created in Word and added to the Padlet (description of study), others use Google Forms (Release and post-sort questions), and some come from other Padlets you’ve created (q-sort array). These components are combined to form one Padlet display. You would use the “subject email” that you created for your study and set access to this display
Feel free to contact us if you have questions about the process. We would love to hear from you. Please cite this web location for reference should you use the Padlet sort method in your research.
